Dive (and swim, hoop and wrestle) into a busy local sports weekend

A DIVERSE SLATE OF SPORTS hits the area for the weekend, including host of high school boys’ basketball teams hitting the state for various tournaments. The fun comes on Friday and Saturday with several swimming and diving meets within the area.

Wednesday: The Rockets start a quick two-game road swing when they visit the Cavaliers for a 6:00pm tip. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest starts its coverage with the pregame show at 5:30pm.

A trio of Dickinson High School football players are among the finalists for the 2019 UIL High School Awards Dinner, which will be held at the Bayou City Event Center, located at 9401 Knight Road at Holmes Road. Quarterback Mike Welch is a finalist for Offensive Player of the Year, while defensive back D.J. Warnell is a Defensive Player of the Year finalist. John Snelson is a finalist for Coach of the Year.

Clear Falls’ wrestling team hits the mat when the Knights visit Humble at 6:00pm.

Thursday: It’s all about tournament play for boys’ high school basketball teams. Clear Brook is at the Royal Tournament, while Clear Creek and Clear Falls are each at the Pride of Texas Tournament at Tuloso-Midway. Clear Springs joins Galveston Ball and state-ranked La Marque at the Fort Bend ISD Tournament, state-ranked Dickinson is at the Cypress Hoops Invitational, while Friendswood takes part in the Gregory-Portland Tourney. Hitchcock will participate in the Sweeny Tournament, while Santa Fe heads to Gonzales for tourney action. Texas City will be one of the teams taking part in the Decatur Tournament.

In high school wrestling action, Clear Brook visits Brazoswood at 5:00pm.

Friday: A busy night of girls’ high school basketball starts at 6:00pm when Friendswood visits Clear Falls, followed by Ridge Point at Hitchcock at 6:15pm. Clear Brook at Alief Hastings, Clear Creek at Alief Taylor, Alief Elsik at Dickinson, Stafford at La Marque, Clear Springs at Pearland and Alvin at Texas City each tip off at 7:00pm.

Clear Creek, Clear Falls and Clear Springs will be among the schools taking part in the two-day Mustang Holiday Splash at Friendswood High School. Dickinson will compete in the Reindeer Classic at Pearland.

Friendswood’s wrestling team will also be in action as the Mustangs are on the road at New Waverly.

The Rockets make their one regular season appearance in Orlando when they take on the Magic at 6:00pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest starts coverage at 5:30pm with the pregame show.

Saturday: High school wrestling takes focus for the day as Clear Brook and Clear Falls will be at the Katy Tompkins Invitational. Clear Creek is at Sam Houston, while Clear Springs takes part in the Houston Round Robin. 

Clear Brook and Texas City will be among the swimming teams competing in the Reindeer Invitational at Dawson High School.

Coming home from the road, the Rockets welcome the Pistons to Toyota Center at 8:00pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will hit the air with the pregame show at 7:30pm.
