Dori Nelson, the Galveston Art League Gallery’s Featured Artist for March, expressed herself through her art from the time she was a youngster. Today, Nelson views art as an essential part of her personal interactions: “Art is my means of communicating the color I see in my world, my meditation, and my means of connecting with people and with my spirit.”
She will exhibit about a dozen of her vibrant artworks in the league’s gallery, 2117A Post Office St. in Galveston, from 12:00pm to 6:00pm every Friday thru Sunday through March 28. In addition, Nelson’s artwork – along with many pieces by other Art League members – will be available online; please visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com (use the “March Show” link on the homepage) to see and shop virtually.
Nelson, who grew up in Valley Stream, N.Y., and attended the Art Students League in New York City as a teenager, received her Bachelor of Science degree in art from Hofstra University in New York. After relocating to Texas with her husband and son, she earned a master’s degree in fine arts from the University of Houston.
Nelson, a Seabrook resident, has taught art in public schools and worked in advertising.
When she lived in the Virgin Islands, Nelson exhibited her work in galleries there. In the states, Nelson has displayed her watercolor paintings and mixed-media art at the Lawndale Gallery in Houston, galleries in Cushing, Maine, and several locations in Galveston, including the Galveston Art League Gallery.
The nonprofit Art League, founded 107 years ago, has a mission of advocating on behalf of the visual arts, art education, and regional artists.
Nelson has a professional-level membership in the Galveston Art League, which invites non-artists as well as artists to join. Membership perks include reduced fees for entering monthly shows; invitations to member-only preview parties of monthly gallery exhibits; receiving a quarterly e-newsletter with information about local art news, artists, and art opportunities; and early notice of league-hosted workshops with limited slots available. Members also feel good knowing that they are lending their support to the Galveston County region’s art community.
Membership fees, which are tax-deductible, represent a significant income source for the Galveston Art League, which is staffed by volunteers. The league thrives on support from fees for artists’ participation in shows and workshops, commissions on gallery sales, tax-deductible contributions, and an annual fundraiser gala (the fall 2020 gala was canceled but has been rescheduled to May 23).
