Participants in an upcoming Galveston Art League workshop will learn how to make photographic images without a camera. The two processes taught are cyanotypes, an early photographic process that uses a light-sensitive solution, and an ultraviolet light source in making an image. Lumen prints use traditional darkroom paper to expose an object until its image is captured, and no developer is used.
This workshop is scheduled from 10:00am to 1:00pmA on Saturday, July 17, at the Galveston Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston. Students will be able to keep sample images made utilizing both processes. Enrollment is limited, and registration is open now at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com. Cost is $55.
Kristy Peet, the workshop instructor, will provide all of the supplies required for the class, but students also may bring in items to “photograph” via the cyanotype or lumen process if they wish. Peet suggests plant matter, fruits, and other translucent objects or objects with interesting outlines as subjects for imaging.
A native of Dallas, Peet lives and works in Houston. She is a professor of art at College of the Mainland in Texas City. For seven years Peet was vice president of BOX13 Artspace, an artist-run exhibition and studio space devoted to the creation and advancement of experimental contemporary art in Houston.
A large-format analog photographer, she has exhibited her work across the country, including a solo show at the Dallas Contemporary. Her work is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and Savannah College of Art and Design. Her website is www.kristypeet.com.
Peet’s workshop fits with the Galveston Art League’s mission of advancing visual arts and art education in the greater Galveston County region. The 107-year-old Art League is run totally by volunteers; the league has never employed a salaried staffer. The nonprofit league is supported by contributions, gallery sales, tax-deductible memberships (click on “Join” at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com) and an annual gala fundraiser.
