THE END OF JUNE (already?) gives local fans one more chance to see the Astros at home while the biggest event of the high school football offseason — the adidas Texas 7on7 State Tournament — will see three local teams bid to stand out among the best 7on7 squads across the Lone Star State.
Wednesday: It’s an early start to the finale of the Astros’ homestand as Dallas Keuchel (4-8, 3.90 ERA) takes the mound for the hometowners against the Blue Jays beginning at 1:10pm. Keuchel looks as if he has turned around his sluggish starts by allowing just two unearned runs in his last 12 innings and will be opposed by Toronto’s Marco Estrada, who comes into the contest with a 4-7 record and a 4.48 ERA. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will get the day rolling at 12:30pm with the pregame show.
Thursday: Hitchcock steps up against 31 of the top 7on7 high school football teams in Division II in the first day of the annual event in College Station. The Bulldogs qualified for the event by winning their own tournament last month, putting them in the state 7on7 for the fifth straight year. The Division II finals will be held on Friday afternoon.
A trip to Florida awaits the Astros with the first of a four-game set at the Rays. Lance McCullers (8-3, 3.82 ERA) gets the start for Houston but the Astros will have to wait a little longer before finding out who will get the start for Tampa Bay, as the Rays had not announced a starter as of Monday night. Game time is set for 6:10pm with AT&T Sportnet Southwest starting its coverage with the pregame show at 5:30pm.
Friday: The Division I portion of the adidas Texas 7on7 state tournament begins with Clear Brook and Friendswood representing the Galveston County area. Both the Wolverines and the Mustangs qualifed for the final Division I berths during the Houston Athletic Training and Health event last weekend, where they will compete against the likes of Katy, Manvel, The Woodlands, Fort Bend Travis and Austin Westlake. The tournament will conclude on Saturday with the Division I championship game.
While the Astros are certain that Gerrit Cole (9-1, 2.56 ERA) will take the mound for the second game of the weekend series against the Rays, Tampa Bay does not have a clear idea as to who will get the starting nod when the game begins at 6:10pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will be on the air starting at 5:30pm with the pregame show.
The 10th annual BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup will be held at BBVA Compass Stadium when the Dynamo hosts Liga MX club C.F. Monterrey beginning at 7:30pm. This year’s proceeds will benefit the KIPP Opportunity Campus in northwest Houston. Tickets for the match are available on the Dynamo’s website, with tickets starting at $30.
Saturday: Astros in the afternoon closes out the month of June when Justin Verlander (9-2, 1.60 ERA) is the pitcher of choice for Houston when they take on Tampa Bay beginning at 3:10pm. For once, the Rays have their starting pitcher announced as they go with Matt Andriese (1-3, 4.02 ERA). AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will have the game live starting at 2:30pm with the pregame show.
