Groundbreaking for the Moody Family Corps Community Center is scheduled for September 6 at 9:00 am at 4915 Emmett F. Lowry Parkway in Texas City. Construction of the 16,500 square foot building is expected to take about 12 months. Services offered by The Salvation Army in Galveston County were severely hampered by a fire in 2012 that destroyed two buildings on Texas Avenue. Operations continued in a smaller temporary building while plans were made and funds were raised for a replacement facility. The Moody Foundation pledged $1.5 million toward the center which is named for the Moody Family.
On August 16, the Women’s Auxiliary is hosting the second annual Boots & BBQ at the Nessler Center in Texas City. The fun and informal event will feature the presentation of the Champion of Hope award to Fred and Kim Raschke, long-time supporters of The Salvation Army. A BBQ meal prepared by the Lighthouse Charity team will be available from 5:30 – 7:30 for $25.00 each. There will be dancing and games for the family. All proceeds benefit the programs of The Salvation Army Galveston County. Sponsorships and tickets are available online at www.salvationarmygalvestoncounty.org.
Despite the temperature outside, Christmas is right around the corner, and preparations are underway for the annual AngelTree campaign. Parents with low-moderate income can sign up their children ages 12 and under for Christmas gift assistance beginning on October 9 at 9:00 am. Details, volunteer information and the complete schedule is available at www.salvationarmygalvestoncounty.org under Volunteer Opportunities/AngelTree. Angel gift lists will be available for adoption by the public on November 1. Last year, over 2500 children received gifts through the Angel Tree program.
Christmas time also brings the sound of bells ringing in front of local retailers as volunteers ring bells by the famous red kettles. A tradition since 1891, the red
kettle campaign was started by Army Captain Joseph McFee in San Francisco for
the purpose of providing a free Christmas meal for the poor in his community. Today, the kettles ring all over the world and fund much of the work of The Salvation Army. Money raised in the kettles stays in the local community. The bells will start ringing on Black Friday and continue until Christmas Eve. There are volunteer opportunities available across Galveston County. Call today to reserve your place! (409) 763-1961, ext. 75313.
