BACK IN THE DAY

When I was growing up I used to love hearing my

grandmother tell me stories of her childhood. One in

particular was about coming across a rattlesnake that

was resting in the high grass next to the pond where

they kept their milk and butter. Mary Record; Mee-

Maw to me, was 9 years old and had been sent to

fetch butter for the dinner table. It was early afternoon

and the weather was just cooling off as the sun began

it’s descent. This would be around 1886. As she ap proached

the pond, the rattler was waking up from his

nap in the sun and was startled by my grandmother.

Mee Maw grabbed the butter from the pond and put it

in her bucket. Suddenly she heard the terrible sound

a rattler makes to ward off danger. She froze. The

rattler froze. Then they both took off as fast as they

could in the opposite directions! In the excitement,

Mee Maw dropped the bucket and had to go back for

it. That’s when she saw the rattler high tailing it in the

other direction.

Needless to say, she made it home safe and sound

and though the butter was a little “grassy”, it was still

pretty tasty on that home made bread she ate for dinner

that night!
