DICKINSON High School tennis coach Chris Reyes was recently awarded the Ike
Groce Vision award at the Texas Tennis Coaches Convention.
“I have been the head tennis coach at Dickinson High School for the past four
years,” said Reyes. “In my first year as the head coach, we had 12 students on the
team, five girls and seven boys, with eight of them in the tennis athletic period. I
worked very hard to build a culture of hard work. I signed up to be a no-cut tennis
program and worked to recruit students to get involved by playing tennis.
“I accepted every level of player with the requirements of hard work in the classroom
and on the court. Every year, our program has grown and we have become
more competitive in and outside our district. This was the first year we were able
to field two teams in the fall, with 18 on varsity and 25 on the JV/freshman team.
I have two athletic periods, one advanced and one beginner class, with 68 students
in the two classes.
“Players in the beginner class have never played tennis but had a desire to
learn a sport and work hard. We have started out spring season and have 78
students on the three teams.”
The Ike Groce Vision award is presented to the coach that demonstrates a clear
vision for his team, players and program. The selected coach keeps that vision
both on and off the court. The coach has a clear knowledge of where their program
is going and is capable of motivating players and the people around them
to make a successful program.
