Start of summer vacation slows down area sports schedule
SCHOOL’S OUT FOR summer, so the schedule becomes top-heavy with Astros along with the
occasional match for the Dynamo. There will be Little League baseball and an assortment of all-
star games featuring area high school talent, but no worries…August will be here before you
know it.
Wednesday: The Astros conclude a 10-game homestand when Wade Miley (5-2, 3.32 ERA)
takes the mound for Houston in a nationally-televised game against the Cubs, who will toss Kyle
Hendricks (4-4, 3.34 ERA). ESPN will have the game beginning at 7:00pm. AT&T Sportsnet
Southwest will also broadcast, with its pregame show starting at 6:30pm.
Thursday: Outside of participating in the first full week of the Texas STAR Fishing Tournament
or watching Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Warriors and Raptors, the day is pretty
quiet.
Friday: It’s back to the west coast for the Astros, who start a seven-game road swing beginning
in Oakland where Brad Peacock (5-2, 3.19 ERA) gets the nod for Houston while the A’s – who
entered the week with a nine-game winning streak – will go with former Astros hurler Mike
Fiers (4-3, 5.00 ERA), who has thrown the season’s only no-hitter. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest
will start its coverage at 8:30pm, leading into the first pitch at 9:07pm.
Saturday: Justin Verlander (8-2, 2.38 ERA) gets the start for the Astros in the middle game of
their weekend set against the A’s beginning at 9:07pm. Brett Anderson (6-3, 3.86 ERA) makes
his second start of the week for Oakland, having pitched against the Angels on Memorial Day.
As usual, AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will have the broadcast beginning with the pregame show
at 8:30am.
The Dynamo return to action at BBVA Compass Stadium when they welcome Sporting Kansas
City for a 7:30pm match. KUBE-57 will broadcast the game live for those unable to make it out
to the contest.
