HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL continues into the new month, but the focus of attention will be at Minute Maid Park when the Astros open the American League Divisional Series with Games 1 and 2 played on Friday and Saturday.
Wednesday: Girls’ high school basketball fall league play continues at Texas City High School with games starting at 5:30pm and running through 7:30pm.
Thursday: Texas City’s cross-country team participates in the Houston Baptist University Invitational beginning at 8:00am.
Friday: The high school volleyball schedule begins at 5:30pm with La Marque at Sweeny. Dickinson at Alvin, Hitchcock at Boling, Clear Springs at Clear Creek and Clear Brook at Clear Lake each starting their matches at 6:00pm. Goose Creek Memorial at Friendswood, Santa Fe at Galena Park and Texas City at Galveston Ball each get under way at 6:30pm.
In team tennis, La Porte at Clear Springs is at 3:00pm, followed by Clear Brook at Baytown Sterling and Clear Creek at Deer Park at 3:30pm
The cross-country slate will have Clear Brook at the Lake Houston Invitational in Huffman-Hargrave, while Clear Creek and Galveston Ball each starting at 8:00am. Clear Falls participates in the Tomball Tune-Up, its final meet before district titles are decided on October 17.
Game time won’t be determined until either Tuesday or Wednesday, but the Astros are at home for Game 1 of the American League Divisional Series. Either Justin Verlander (21-6, 2.58 ERA) or Gerrit Cole (20-5, 2.50 ERA) will get the start. The game will be aired live on FS1.
The James Harden-Russell Westbrook Reunion gets its unofficial debut when the Rockets play the Clippers at midnight, as the game will be playted in Hawaii. NBATV will have the game live.
Saturday: Either Verlander or Cole will get the start for the Astros in Game 2 of the American League Divisional Series. Start time has not been confirmed but FS1 will have the game live.
Sam Houston, SFA resume state’s longest college football rivalry
THERE IS FOOTBALL, YET JUST NOT as much of it this weekend. Open dates impact three local high school football teams while Houston and Texas A&M are each off on Saturday. There’s still good matchups, but the best will be in Houston on Saturday as one the best rivalries in college football take center stage.
Thursday: No varsity games are scheduled for the day.
Friday: Clear Springs, Hitchcock and La Marque will each have open weeks, with both the Bulldogs and Cougars gearing up for district openers next week.
The District 24-6A schedule will have state-ranked Dickinson at Clear Creek (Veterans’ Memorial Stadium) and Clear Brook at Clear Falls (Challenger-Columbia Stadium) beginning at 7:00pm. The Dickinson at Clear Creek game can be viewed on TexanLive.com.
In District 22-5A, Galveston Ball is at Friendswood and Texas City at state-ranked Shadow Creek each start at 7:00pm. The Stingarees will be aired on Victory Sports Network.
Santa Fe continues its District 12-5A-2 schedule when the Indians visit Baytown Lee at 7:30pm.
Saturday: The college football slate starts with Texas Southern at Alabama A&M at 2:00pm, followed by 11th-ranked Texas visiting West Virginia at 2:30pm (KTRK 13). Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State resumes the state’s oldest college football rivalry in the Battle of the Piney Woods at NRG Stadium beginning at 3:00pm (ESPN+). Rice at Alabama-Birmingham (ESPN+), Incarnate Word at Houston Baptist (ESPN3) and Abilene Christian at Lamar (ESPN3) each start at 6:00pm.
