New beginnings: boys’ basketball, wrestling begin 2019-20 seasons

Wednesday: A pair of boys’ basketball scrimmages are on the schedule with Texas City at Dawson and La Marque at Goose Creek Memorial. Both scrimmages start at 4:00pm.

High school wrestling begins its 2019-20 season when Clear Falls welcomes Jersey Village for a 5:00pm match.

The Rockets will have the national spotlight when they host the Clippers for a 6:30pm start on ESPN. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will also have the game, with the pregame show beginning at 6:00pm.

Thursday: CCISD will host the annual Peggy Whitley Classic, one of the more popular girls’ basketball tourneys in the state. Clear Brook, Clear Creek, Clear Falls, Clear Lake and Clear Springs will be among the teams participating along with Galveston Ball in the tourney, which concludes on Saturday. Thursday’s games begin at 9:00am and will be played at all three of the Clear Creek High School gyms and at Clear Springs High School.

Friendswood’s girls’ basketball team will be in Fort Worth for the Northside Tournament while Hitchcock will be part of the Lumberton Tournament.

Clear Brook begins its 2019-20 wrestling season when the Wolverines host Katy at 5:00pm.

Friday: The 2019-20 high school boys’ basketball season gets underway with Kincaid at Clear Falls, Clear Creek at Deer Park and Alvin at Galveston Ball beginning at 7:00pm, followed by Houston Sterling at Clear Springs at 7:30pm.

Two girls’ basketball games are also on the slate with Texas City at Brazoswood starting at 6:00pm and Bay Area Christian at La Marque at 6:30pm.

Saturday: Dickinson, ranked 4th in the Class 6A boys’ basketball poll, opens its regular season with a massive showdown against 3rd-ranked Beaumont United at the annual RCS Sports Opener at Houston’s Campbell Center starting at 3:30pm. La Marque’s boys’ basketball team also has a tough task to open the season as the Cougars welcome a Silsbee team that is ranked 8th in 4A beginning at 2:00pm. Santa Fe opens its season at home against neighboring Hitchcock at 2:30pm.

Clear Falls’ wrestling teams will host the Knights Invitational beginning at 8:00pm. Clear Springs’ wrestling squads will be at Cinco Ranch beginning at 8:00am.

Win or go home: high school playoffs begin

THE LONG HOURS OF sweat and practice have paid off for seven area high school football teams, who will start their respective roads to the state championship with bi-district round games on Thursday and Friday. The action continues into Saturday with Houston and Houston Baptist are among the area college football teams hosting late season games.

Thursday: La Marque makes its 10th straight postseason appearance (and 28th in the past 30) when the 6-4 Cougars meet La Grange (7-3) in a 4A, Region III, Division II clash at Katy’s Rhodes Stadium at 7:00pm.

Friday: The area’s six other playoff teams are in action, beginning with Clear Creek (4-6) versus Strake Jesuit (8-2) at Houston’s Clay Stadium in a 6A, Region III, Division 2 contest, followed by Clear Falls (7-2), making their first postseason appearance since 2013, takes on 4-6 George Ranch at CCISD Veterans Memorial Stadium (6A, Region III, Division II). In a pair of 6A, Region III, Division I contests, Clear Springs (6-4) meets Dawson (9-1) at Pearland’s The Rig while state-ranked Dickinson (9-1) hosts Pearland (8-2) at Sam Vitanza Stadium. Each game starts at 7:00pm.

Friendswood (8-2) gets homefield at Henry Winston Stadium against 6-4 Kingwood Park in a 5A, Region III, Division I contest at 7:00pm. Hitchcock (4-6) makes its eighth straight trip to the playoffs when the Bulldogs meet 9-1 Vanderbilt Industrial at Eddie Joseph Memorial Stadium at 7:30pm in a 3A, Region IV, Division I contest.

Saturday: A busy day and evening of college football kicks off at noon when Northwestern State visits Sam Houston State (ESPN+), followed by Lamar at Houston Baptist at 2:00pm (ESPN3). Edward Waters at Prairie View starts at 2:00pm. Memphis, ranked 21st in the nation, visits Houston (ESPN2) and Texas at Iowa State (FS1) both kick off at 2:30pm. Stephen F. Austin at Central Arkansas (ESPN+) starts at 3:00pm, while Rice visits Middle Tennessee State (ESPN+) at 3:30pm. The evening concludes with South Carolina at Texas A&M at 6:30pm (SEC Network).
