Did you know insomnia in the United States workforce costs businesses over $63 billion in lost productivity over the course of a year? Rest and relaxation is a vital and often neglected component of every person’s overall health and well-being. Knowing when to take some down time is important.
Listen to your body when you have those days where you wake up tired before you’re even out of bed. Giving yourself time to quiet your thoughts and letting your mind rest is an important healing process. According to the National Sleep Foundation, by not getting the proper amount of rest, your body is at higher risk for certain cancers, diabetes, higher blood pressure, cardiovascular problems, weakened immune system, higher stress levels and headaches. Rest is also needed for muscles to repair themselves, reduce inflammation and reduce aches and pains.
Treating your body well is about listening to what it needs. Eating right, drinking plenty of water and exercise are all important components of maintaining proper health, but so is rest. So if you find yourself feeling groggy or having a lack of energy despite a healthy routine, consider giving yourself a break and getting some R&R. It can be as simple as creating a bedtime routine, which puts your body in a relaxed state and mentally gives you something to look forward to each night. During your lunch break, turn off your devices and allow your mind to rest. Unplugging for 30-60 minutes per day can have significant benefits to your overall health.
However you decide to incorporate rest and relaxation, be sure to include it consistently into your lifestyle your body and mind will thank you.
