Can Christians be of a reprobate mind?

Ask yourself this question: are you for real in Christ Jesus?

There are people fall away from God and never desire to go back.

One thing that seems to trouble many believers is the thought of finally falling away from God – being “turned over to a reprobate mind.” It also seems the potential is very great when someone who professes to be saved falls away from the faith. Then, we realize how weak and sinful we are. But we also need to realize how great the grace of God is.

Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the LORD hath rejected them. Jeremiah 6:30

Silver that was unable to be refined was considered worthless – reprobate — and was to be rejected. Because of Israel’s refusal to get right with God, they are compared to reprobate silver because God had rejected them.

Rejection is only part of the definition. In Romans 1:28, the meaning is not only of rejection but abandonment. These people had gone so far in sin, “they did not like to retain God in their knowledge,” and so God gave them what they wanted. They did not want God, righteousness, holiness, cleanness, or purity, so God “gave them over.” These people are reprobate because of their hatred toward God.

Now, the question is, were these people really saved?

Paul goes on to say that these people knew full well the judgment of God upon those who do these things, yet they continued to do them.

To get to the heart of our question, what about those who profess salvation yet turn away? After all, the people we just described hated God and openly showed their hatred for God.

They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, and being disobedient, and unto every work reprobate.

Paul says these people, who professed they knew God, were reprobate. How can this be? The answer is found in Titus 1:15.

Unto the pure all things are pure, but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure, but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

Yes, they professed to know God, but they were reprobate. Why were they reprobate? Because they did not believe. These people were never saved. The same can be said for those described in 1 John 2:19

What is a reprobate mind?

A reprobate mind is a mind that is given over to sinful passions and ungodly desires. It is another way of describing a person who is set on satisfying the flesh and not on the Spirit of God. It is a person who rejects God and does what is self-serving instead of what God desires. Therefore, someone who is reprobate is under the condemnation of God.

Such a person does not attend church, does not care about the things of God, does not read the Word, and does not pray. They are judged by God and are under condemnation, so they have no conviction of their sin or desire for God.

The term “reprobate mind” is found in the King James Version in Romans 1:28

Another word for reprobate is depraved.  It means… “Unapproved, unworthy, spurious, worthless. In a pass. sense meaning disapproved, rejected, cast away.”1

REPROBATE—that which is rejected on account of its own worthlessness (Jer. 6:30Heb. 6:8; “rejected”). This word is also used with reference to persons cast away or rejected because they have failed to make use of opportunities offered them (1 Cor. 9:272 Cor. 13:5–7).”4

Can Christians be of a reprobate mind?

No, Real Christians cannot be of reprobate mind because they are indwelt by God (John 14:23), and are born again (John 3:3-82 Corinthians 5:17).  Because they are changed, real Christians will seek the will of God.  But, this does not mean perfection. It means that real Christians struggle against their sin, but they are not judged by God as to have a reprobate mind (Romans 1:28).

Bro Wesley,
A difficult subject was well addressed in this article you shared. Very well explained and I believe what you wrote is spot on. I have never heard you preach and therefore not sure what your theology is but I again thank you for sharing this article.
