
The Rotary Club of League City celebrated the success of their Ninth Annual Polar Bear Plunge for Polio at their weekly meeting Thursday, March 3 at Esteban’s Fiesta Shack. The event took place Saturday, December 11 at South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center. The goal was to raise funds for Rotary International’s Polio Plus campaign. The Polio Plus campaign has been making headlines lately, continuing its partnership with the Gates Foundation and the World Health Organization. The club’s successful campaign raised almost $6,000.00. Every single jumper was awarded a certificate, a stuffed polar bear and a one of kind Polar Plunge ornament, The top three fund raisers were Amy Killgore, Ava Sloan and Misty Gawelek. The top fundraiser, Misty Gawelek, a new member of the club, raised a fantastic $1,922.50. She took home the TRAVELING POLAR BEAR trophy.
The worldwide eradication of polio is one of Rotary International’s many goals. 20,000,000 children have been saved from the Paralysis of Polio since 1988. The war against Polio is on-going with a concentrated focus in Pakistan and Afghanistan, all other parts of the world have been declared polio-free.
