Astros continue springing into initial contests
APRIL ARRIVES IN grand fashion as baseball and softball take over the high school sports scene.
The Astros continue their opening series of the season while the Rockets head out west as the
final two weeks before the NBA playoffs get under way.
Sunday: Wade Miley makes his first career start with the Astros when they close out their first
series of the regular season at the Rays beginning at 12:10pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will
begin coverage with the pregame show at 11:30am.
Monday: A host of intermediate school athletes will get to show their wares in track and field,
including Texas City Blocker Middle School, which will take part in seventh and eighth grade
events at Manvel High School. The boys’ running finals and the finals in the girls’ field events
will each begin at 4:30pm.
The opening road trip continues for the Astros as they dance with the in-state rival Rangers
beginning at 7:05pm. Brad Peacock (3-5, 3.46 ERA in 2018) makes his first start of 2019 and will
be opposed by Rangers starter Drew Smyly (7-12, 4.88 ERA last season). AT&T Sportsnet
Southwest will start its coverage at 6:30pm with the pregame show.
Tuesday: A busy night of high school baseball starts with Clear Falls at Alvin, Clear Creek at
Clear Lake, Clear Springs at Dickinson and Bay City at La Marque beginning at 6:00pm. Hitchcock
at Danbury, Galena Park at Galveston Ball, Friendswood at Goose Creek Memorial and
Galveston Ball at Texas City each begins at 7:00pm.
The high school softball slate will have Hitchcock at Danbury beginning at 5:30pm, followed by
Bay City at La Marque at 6:00pm. Clear Brook at Clear Falls, Santa Fe at Galveston Ball and
Texas City at Friendswood each start at 6:30pm while Dickinson at Clear Creek wraps it up at
6:45pm.
Astros v. Rangers continues when Justin Verlander, who made the opening day start for
Houston on Thursday, returns to the mound against Shelby Miller (0-4, 10.69 ERA with the
Diamondbacks last season), who will be making his first start in a Texas uniform. As was the
case on Monday, AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will begin pregame coverage at 6:30pm, leading
into the first pitch at 7:05pm.
After hosting the Kings on Sunday, the Rockets travel to Sacramento for the final meeting of the
2018-19 regular season. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will begin coverage with the pregame show
at 8:30pm. There will be some Astros fans who will be switched from hardball to hoops, so
there’s no need to panic if that happens.
