Area workout facilities welcome new year’s resolutionaries

THERE WAS LITTLE SHOCK to see area gyms and workout facilities open the new year with an increase of new faces and a jolt to their respective bottom lines. As always, the flipping of the calendar led to many resolving that “this will be the year” physical goals will be achieved.

“It has been busier than expected, but that’s good news for us,” said Jasmine, a customer service specialist at Texas City’s Planet Fitness. “Wednesday (New Year’s Day) was active. There’s a lot of new faces we have seen, but we’re also beginning to see a lot of our regulars return and get back into their routine.”

Much of Planet Fitness’ early increase in customers stems from their .20 cent enrollment fee, which runs through this Thursday. For only $10 per month, those enrolling into the facility will be able to do so without concern of a long-term commitment.

Right across the street from Planet Fitness, Anytime Fitness remains true to its name, keeping its doors open 24/7 for their customers. Like Planet Fitness, Anytime Fitness is ringing in 2020 with an offer of $1 to join their facilities through January 11.

“There’s fantastic equipment and setup,” said Shun Valdez. “It’s perfect for any style of training. Management and staff are top-notch and provides a positive atmosphere.”

Texas City’s World Gym opened the new year with a marked increase of vehicles at its Mall of the Mainland location. They are offering a personal training session to open 2020, giving its members three personal training sessions for only $99.

There is no offseason for Brandon Robinson and his Dynamic Athlete Builders facility, which is also located at Mall of the Mainland. The former Texas City High School football and track star opened the new year with his annual DAB Bootcamp that also includes a weight loss challenge. Robinson also continues to be a go-to source for local athletes looking to keep their physical edge during the offseason and remains a go-to for ex-Texans running back D’Onta Foreman, who had to sit out the 2019 NFL regular season due to injuries.

A host of area athletes have used DAB during their holiday break from college. Robinson, who is also a coach at Santa Fe ISD, will be opening up the batting cages at DAB for baseball and softball players to get into the swing of things as the upcoming season looms.

Not to be outdone, Crunch Fitness, which opened last month in League City, will have former University of Texas football icon Vince Young holding a private workout with 20 winners of a contest the gym recently held. The former national championship hero and College Football Hall of Fame inductee will hold the session at 5:00pm on Thursday.

“It’s the best place to work and workout,” said Jackie Mendoza. “So many Olympic weights and a tactical turf with classes that will make you sweat. The staff is super friendly, so there’s always a smiling face to greet you.”

Crunch Fitness is offering a free seven-day all-access trial run for prospective customers that includes the opportunity to use their ride studio along with using the hydromassage that helps customers get an early start on relaxing their muscles following a workout.
