Variety highlights weekend sports slate

WHILE GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL playoff basketball moves into the area around, the sports schedule for the remainder of the week is filled with a variety of action. Soccer continues its regular season while tourney play dots the softball slate. There’s also a healthy dose of baseball scrimmages along with a host of track and field events.

Wednesday: Powerlifting takes center stage as Dickinson and La Marque will be at Texas City competing in a boys’ event that will conclude on Friday. Meanwhile, the La Marque girls’ powerlifting team heads to New Caney Porter for an event.

Thursday: The start of softball season also means tournament play, meaning area teams are scattered throughout the state. Clear Brook is at the Crosby Varsity Tournament, while Clear Creek and Clear Falls are among the teams competing at the Brenham Tournament. Clear Springs, Friendswood and Santa Fe are in Bryan-College Station for the NFCA Lead-Off Tournament, while Dickinson comprises part of the Goose Creek Memorial Tournament. Galveston Ball plays host to their own varsity tournament. La Marque heads off to the Stafford Tournament, with Texas City participating in the Katy ISD Tournament. 

The Rockets return for their first action after the All-Star Break when they visit the Warriors beginning at 9:30pm. TNT will have the national coverage.

Friday: Area baseball teams will get their final scrimmages in before next week’s regular season openers. Clear Brook is at Dobie starts the afternoon at 3:00pm, with Galveston Ball at Brazosport and Kingwood Part at Clear Creek start at 4:00pm. Clear Springs and Friendswood are part of a tri-scrimmage at La Porte with games at 4:00pm and 7:00pm. Texas City at Clear Lake and Summer Creek at Dickinson are each 5:00pm starts. Meanwhile, Hitchcock will have its Red/White scrimmage at 3:00pm.

In boys’ soccer, Dickinson at Clear Creek, Clear Brook at Clear Falls, Texas City at Friendswood and Santa Fe at Galveston Ball are each 7:30pm starts. 

The girls’ soccer slate will have Clear Falls at Clear Brook, Clear Creek at Dickinson, Galveston Ball at Friendswood at Texas City each beginning at 7:30pm.

In track and field, Clear Brook at the Sam Mosley Relays at Humble’s Turner Stadium, Clear Creek is at the St. Thomas Eagles Relays, Clear Falls and Dickinson are at the Manvel/Dawson Relays, while Clear Springs competes at the Lake Travis Invitational. Friendswood and Santa Fe are at the Maverick Stampede at Pasadena Memorial while Texas City is at the North Shore Relays.

The tennis slate is highlighted by the Foster-Holtman Tournament, hosted by Clear Brook as each of the CCISD schools and Dickinson square off over the next two days. La Marque’s tennis team heads to Sweeny.

Saturday: The Rockets continue their post All-Star Break road trip as they visit the Jazz. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will have the pregame show at 7:30pm leading into the tip-off just after 8:00pm.

The undefeated Roughnecks look to keep their XFL season perfect when they travel to Tampa Bay for a 1:00pm clash against the Vipers. The game can be seen live on KTRK 13.
