THE NEXT step toward making Lago Mar one of the county’s
premier neighborhoods was unveiled on Thursday in a
high-profile gathering that kicked off the arrival of a 12-acre
lagoon in the Texas City subdivision.
Several hundred people were in attendance to see how the
lagoon, slated to be the largest in the state, will fit into the
plans for Lago Mar. Once completed, the lagoon will provide
residents with a beach-like environment throughout the
year, as there will be domes built to protect users from the
weather.
Developed by Land Tejas, the lagoon will be part of the first
phase of Lago Mar, which will have 520 homes. Eventually,
Lago Mar’s 2,033 acres will have as many as 4,400 homes
and a potential residence of over 14,000. The numbers will
provide a massive boost to Texas City and the Galveston
County area along with more revenue from tourists with over
30 entertainment sites that Michael Garfield, the emcee for
Thursday’s event, said, “will rival Las Vegas and will set a
new standard for entertainment.”
The lagoon is slated for completion in 2020, and while it will
be free for Lago Mar residents, there will also be a public
access portion that will require a fee for anyone who wants
to use the facilities.
Award-winning country music singer Tracy Byrd provided
entertainment for the event.
“To have a destination like this lagoon, it’s a real asset for the city,” said Texas City
Mayor Matt Doyle. “It’s important to the people to come enjoy the city, and we had
the dike, but now we have the lagoon.”
