History Isn’t Stuffy When It Inspires Plein Air
Plein Air Southwest, the annual members competition for Outdoor Painters Society, is showing
us a different way to preserve history. Galveston Historical Foundation and the 45 th Annual
Galveston Historic Homes Tour is working together this week with 44 competition artists to
wow the public with paintings that will record Galveston in 2019.
Artist sightings will be concentrated around the eight featured homes on the 45 th Historic
Homes Tour, Downtown Strand area, Galveston Harbor, and Tall Ship Elisa, and up and down
Broadway starting Monday May 6 until early afternoon on Sunday May 10. The 44 juried artists
from all over Texas, as well as Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, Missouri, Illinois,
Wisconsin, New Mexico and Colorado will be looking at the island with a fresh eye, recording
what they see.
Wet paintings will be for sale in the Grand Ball Room at the 1859 Ashton Villa on Broadway
Saturday May 11 from 9:00am to 6:00pm and Sunday, May 12 from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Off-
the-easel sales will also be available on Saturday morning after the PASW Quick Draw also held
outside the Ashton Villa grounds. Sunday offers another opportunity for off-the-easel sales if
you catch an artist in your favorite place. Plan now to stop by to see a painting of your favorite
island landmark. The Galveston Historical Foundation’s goal of preserving the islands
historical properties will benefit from the proceeds of the artwork sales.
