THE MIDDLETON REPORT

RECENT HAPPENINGS IN THE LEGISLATUREStanding for LifeThe right to life is the most sacred and fundamental right that exists. Over the last several sessions, the Texas Legislature has worked to reduce any and all avenues by which organizations like Planned Parenthood receive taxpayer dollars. This past Friday, the House passed Senate Bill 22, which bans local governments from providing any type of resources to entities that perform abortions or abortion referrals. This is a major step in completely cutting these organizations off from public dollars. As a co-author on Senate Bill 22 and your State Representative, I am thankful for the chance to stand up for life and help pass this bill into law.

Chick-Fil-A Bill to Become LawRecently, the City of San Antonio blocked a Chick-Fil-A restaurant from moving into their municipal airport for political reasons. The city cited the company’s known endorsement of traditional family values and associated causes as the reason for their decision. In response, the Legislature has passed legislation ensuring that a company cannot be punished for their support of sincerely held religious beliefs. Yesterday, the Texas House passed Senate Bill 1978, which I was proud to be a co-author on. I am grateful for the opportunity to stand up for religious liberty on behalf of my constituents in Galveston and Chambers counties.

Galveston Police Pension Plan ReformAfter months of work with the City of Galveston, the Galveston Police, and my Legislative counterparts, I am pleased to announce that a compromise plan to reform the Galveston Police Department Pension plan is one step away from passing to the Governor to be signed into law, as House Bill 2763 is set to pass back through the House imminently. The bill puts the plan on the path to solvency, does not alter benefits for officers, and protects taxpayers. I am looking forward to this bill becoming law shortly.

Chambers County Court at Law Legislation AdvancesA longtime priority for Chambers County, a bill creating a new County Court at Law has advanced in the Legislature. Senate Bill 891 is this session’s “omnibus” courts bill and includes a section creating the new Chambers County Court at Law. The bill passed the House last week and is well on its way to becoming law. I am confident that this new court will provide more expedient justice for Chambers County residents.
