FORMER LA MARQUE ISD Superintendent Ecomet Burley died on Thursday morning at the age of 65. The news was confirmed by Lufkin ISD Athletic Director Todd Quick and Lufkin Pro Day Group member Oscar Kennedy.
Burley served as Superintendent at LMISD from 2006-13 before serving as Director of the Harris County Department of Education’s Center for Safe and Secure Schools. He retired in July 2019 after serving more than 30 years as educator.
A native of Lufkin, Burley starred at Texas Tech from 1972-75, earning All-Southwest Conference honors three times as a defensive lineman. He was also one of the first players in the school’s history to learn a letter as a freshman after the NCAA began to allow freshman to play varsity sports in 1972. Burley was named as a first-teamer on the Red Raiders’ all-time team and was inducted into the Texas Tech Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004 and into the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame this past August.
Burley took his talents to the Canadian Football League, spending time with the Toronto Argonauts (1976-79), Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1980) and Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1981).
The son of a family that was an influence in education in the East Texas area, Burley Primary School in Lufkin was named after the legacy his parents left in the area.
