TEXAS CITY ISD’s Class of 2020 received an unexpected pick-me-up in the form of a billboard that can be seen on I-45 South. Austin-based Media Choice reached out to the district and presented them with a billboard to honor the graduating classes of Texas City and La Marque, who are now scheduled to have their ceremony at Moody Gardens on June 27.
“We feel so bad for our seniors because it seems like they have been cheated out of their last few months at school with their friends,” said TCISD Media Relations Director Melissa Tortorici.
Media Choice originally presented TCISD with an image to salute the graduating students but then presented them another image that honors the efforts of the teachers, administrators and other staff that have continued to keep classes going virtually in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Like much of the area’s students, TCISD has not been in class since departing for Spring Break on March 7. The state officially shut down any hopes of Texas students returning on April 17.
“Our teachers are sad that they can’t be in their classrooms teaching in looking kids in the eye,” said Tortorici. “Our students, who in the past begged for extra days off, actually are finding out they prefer to be in school for learning.”
Tortorici also announced that TCISD will have a Senior Night on May 1 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, with La Marque holding their event at the Etheredge Stadium parking lot while Texas City will be at Stingaree Stadium.
Attendees will be able to come to the respective parking lots to honk, clap and cheer as graduates pick up their cap and gown.
