Yoga is more than just a stretch class; it’s a workout which involves spiritual, mental and physical aspects in order to achieve complete balance within the body.  There are several variations of yoga. From Ashtanga to Yin, the benefits are the same.  While the list of benefits of yoga seem endless, we’ve narrowed it down to the top 4.

 #1  Increase your flexibility

Yoga is not just for the flexible, its for those looking to improve their flexibility. Odds are, the yogis that you see practicing impressive poses such as the scorpion and dancer pose comes from months of routine practice. One study found that people who practiced yoga routinely for eight weeks had a 35 percent increase in flexibility. With improved flexibility, you may notice that chronic aches and pains subside or disappear completely.

#2 Bone Health

Some yoga poses are weight bearing, which stimulates the osteoblasts cells in the body to build and maintain bone density.  Yoga also reduces stress, which could have additional positive impacts on bones by decreasing the stress hormone cortisol. Excessive amounts of cortisol in the body can reduce bone density.

#3 Increased Serotonin

Yoga has been shown to not only decrease cortisol, but also increase serotonin and boost dopamine. Studies show that those with higher a serotonin level are able to handle stress and approach situations with a more open mind, creating better coping strategies.

Because yoga doesn’t require a lot of fancy equipment, it is easily accessible to many.  With just a yoga mat, yoga straps and a few yoga blocks, you can go pretty far in your practice.

#4 Heart Health

Yoga has a focus on bringing awareness to breathe. While practicing certain poses, not only will you be pumping more blood to the heart, but also bringing your awareness to breathe. A study in 2009 found that practicing yogic breathing improved symptoms and lung function in patients with mild-to-moderate asthma. Improving your breathing can help build endurance and keep your lungs and heart healthy.
