Pound is a 45-minute class that incorporates cardio and strength training, using pilates and yoga-type moves with weighted drumsticks, called Ripstix.  The principle of Pound is to provide a high-energy, fun workout that encourages fat burning and muscle strengthening in the most efficient manner, burning up to 900 calories in 45 minutes!

The class starts with a warmup and moves into a series of standing routines using combinations of squats and lunges.  The high energy music during class gets your body pumped up and allows you to find your rhythm using the ripstix in a variety of ways.  Although the ripstix only weighs in at only 1/4 lb., given the variety of constant movement with them throughout the workout, your muscles will definitely feel the results the next day. Towards the end of class, you can expect to go from standing poses down to a floor routine that focuses more on your core.

You can find pound classes in the local area at most gyms including the YMCA, Crunch, and Anytime Fitness.

Pound is an intense, high energy class that is made to shed calories quickly.  If the sound of this new trending class sounds appealing but you’re not quite ready to try it in a group setting, dvd sets are available online at places like Amazon and shop.poundfit.com.  If your body’s reached a plateau and you’re having a hard time shedding those last few “pounds,” give this new trendy workout a try.  This class will have you burning the calories needed in order to lose the extra weight.

900 calories? Where do you get your information and facts? Even the highest of intensity workouts help you burn upward of 500/600 calories. This writer, Samantha Copeland, had a yoga business, Yoga on 6th, that is not even in business anymore, so I doubt she is qualified to give fitness advice.

Not sure what personal vendetta Heather/Karen has against Ms. Copeland, but she is an amazing instructor. Always willing to put in the extra effort to be sure everyone is getting the most out of their workout. The Pound workout sounds like a lot of fun. I’ve heard a few other people mention it and am excited to try it out. Thanks for bringing us something different. It’s nice to be able to mix things up

This sounds fantastic. I watched a video and it looks like something I can really enjoy and accomplish. I am going to definitely get the sticks to do this. I tried Zumba and it wasn’t my cup of tea this looks more like something I can enjoy.
It’s common knowledge the calories you burn depends on your physical fitness and weight 😎
I really enjoy your encouragement and positive attitude to try new things and get moving!!!
See ya at our next yoga class!

This actually sounds really cool!! I’ve never heard of this workout before but looked it up, (watched a couple YouTube videos), because of your recommendation, and the fact that it is so different is exactly what interests me! Love your column every week! To the Heather P., i am a certified personal trainer and advanced group fitness instructor and it has been my personal experience that even in Zumba classes, students can burn 800 cal or more in a 45 min class, this isn’t something abnormal. I believe it’s all about personal intensity and what you put into it. To the writer of the column, thank you for shedding some light on this new trendy workout, I’m always on the lookout for new, fun and effective workouts to keep clients moving and I believe that is exactly what this column is about. Thank you for your time and research and bringing it to light. Great read!!
