Joyce Buffalo will be the Galveston Art League’s Featured Artist from October 1-24. Several of her bold watercolors will be exhibited at the front of the league’s gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston, from 12:00pm to 6:00 pm Fridays-Sundays. Its virtual gallery at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com will also display Buffalo’s works as well as dozens by other league members.
When growing up in Erie, Pa., Buffalo enjoyed art, as did her parents. Her dad and mom painted, and as a girl, Joyce loved to draw and paint. After she moved to Galveston Island in 1994, Buffalo began going to ArtWalks. During one of those downtown Galveston events, she met Sallie Anderson, who teaches watercolor painting. Buffalo, a Jamaica Beach resident, has taken lessons from Anderson since 2004.
Buffalo had a 40-year career in the travel industry, and nowadays she sometimes combines art with her trips. She has been to Fredericksburg, Texas, and to France with student artist groups, and she sometimes participates in art workshops. Buffalo also has lived as a bit of a rolling stone, in Minneapolis, New York City and Germany.
She volunteers at the Galveston Art League Gallery and starting in 2022 will serve as the league’s director of juried exhibitions. The nonprofit organization holds juried contests in February, May and September of each year.
As the Art League’s Featured Artist for October, Buffalo holds a professional membership in the all-volunteer organization. For 107 years the Art League has counted on membership fees to help support its mission of promoting visual arts and art education in Galveston County and the surrounding region. The league invites artists and non-artists to join as members and sponsors; membership fees are tax deductible.
