Galveston County Tax Assessor Collector Cheryl E. Johnson officially announced her campaign for re-election today.

A resident of the Bay Area since 1983, Cheryl was first elected County Tax Assessor Collector in 2004.  A courageous, energetic and experienced leader, she attributes her success in transforming the office to her ability in building a team dedicated to service and her experience overseeing a complex operation.

Johnson foresees that many imminent legislative changes will require her continued leadership including implementation of tax reforms passed in the 86th Session, particularly those impacting county and partner governments as a result of Senate Bill 2.  Further, she believes appraisal reforms are still needed. Her experience both on the Board of the Galveston CAD and years working at GCAD places her in a unique position to provide the expert testimony needed to advance appraisal reforms.

TxDMV is expected to assume responsibility for provision of Texas driver’s license services in 2021 and this is yet another reason her steady hand is needed.  “Not only do I have a team dedicated to customer service and familiar with implementing new services, as Voter Registrar there is an opportunity to improve DPS’s handling of registration and further insuring the integrity of the voter roll.”  With redistricting right around the corner, her experience overseeing boundary changes of State, County and local entities will also be essential.

“You wouldn’t change the captain of the ship in the middle of a storm and now is not the time to turn the County Tax Office over to anyone lacking the skills, experience and knowledge to implement such monumental changes,” said Johnson.

The Galveston County Tax Office recently received the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles Silver Level in the Performance Quality Recognition Program.  Cheryl will take the final step and “Go for the Gold Level” in 2020, further demonstrating her commitment to the office motto, “the race for quality has no finish line” and her on-going promise to increase service, reduce cost and continue the fight for property tax relief.

I would like to put a sign in my yard… my property is 4402 Antigua… it is right at the corner of 3005 and Antigua… I have space for signage all along my back fence and front yard hedge. I will be glad to come and get the sign and place them myself, or you are welcome to put the sign there yourselves. My phone number is 979-559-1062.
