THE 1999 TEXAS CITY STINGAREES state championship football team will be honored on Friday when the Stings host Friendswood in the District 22-5A opener at 7:00pm. Texas City finished 16-0, the first undefeated season in the program’s history. The 4A, Division I crown was the second in three years for the Stingarees, who captured the 4A, Division I championship in 1997. Coach Rusty Dowling’s defense held all but one opponent to under 20 points per game, including shutout wins over Santa Fe (50-0) and Dickinson (28-0). The Stings also handed rival La Marque a 28-16 win in the Cougars’ back yard in Etheredge Stadium. In a driving rainstorm at Texas Stadium, Texas City held off Hereford in a 27-14 decision that saw the Stingarees become one of the last teams to win a state championship game without attempting a pass. The reunion of the ’99 team will be held before the game and at halftime of Friday’s game.
