On February 2, 2020 six students from surrounding area high schools competed for two music scholarships awarded by the Bay Area Chorus of Greater Houston. The scholarships were for two differing emphases in the music field. One scholarship would be awarded to a senior who expressed a desire to major in Music Education. The other was to a senior who wished to pursue a music degree in the performance field.
Each student was required to present a solo performance from classic literature. Three professional music educators were enlisted to judge the participants. In addition to performing each of the singers was required to submit an essay regarding their music aspirations.
While the judges retired to a specified private area to discuss the attributes each singer exhibited the Bay Area Chorus under the direction of artistic director, Milton Pullen, entertained the audience by singing George Frideric Handel’s Coronation Anthem, THE KING SHALL REJOICE.
After the judges reached their conclusion they returned with the results of their decision. Kiley Phillips was the winner of the BAC MaryEllen Oliver High School Vocal Music Education Scholarship and Elizabeth Jackson was winner of the BAC Priscilla Ennis High School Vocal Performance Music Scholarship. Many thanks to all the singers and their accompanists who participated – all were so talented!
