Are you a Humble Person?
Proverbs 11:12: When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.
1 Peter 5:5: Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
What does it mean to you to be a humble person? A humble person doesn’t talk over you, they can take turns in conversation and doesn’t feel the need to cut you off or hear their own voice. They also can actually listen and have a genuine interest in someone besides themselves.
A humble person doesn’t shove their achievements in your face and they don’t brag all the time.
Humble people are easy going and out for a quiet life.
They respect everyone’s points of view even if it differs from theirs. They are not judgmental and understand that not everyone’s the same.
Humble people tend to have a longer fuse than many, and don’t get wound up or angry as quickly as some.
Humble people don’t try to PUT themselves up or appear superior. Humble people are the kind of people that you instantly feel comfortable around and sort of trust from the word go. They are usually pleasant people who don’t leave you feeling drained or weary. Their word is usually their bond and you pick up on that immediately.
A humble person is teachable. Humility believes it can always learn from the education and experiences of others. A humble person is a growing person who is quick to read, invite feedback, and asks good questions. A humble person is at peace with themselves and others. Humility embraces contentment and simplicity.
What Are You Wearing: Pride or Humility? How to dress as Christians, but not in the clothes you might be thinking of. God cares about what we wear, so much so that He directly told us to “…clothe yourselves with humility…” (1 Peter 5:5-11). Conversely, when we wear pride, we are opposing ourselves to the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Wearing pride leads to anxiety, sin, and even death. The benefit of wearing humility is great. So, what are you wearing: pride or humility?
Wearing pride leads to worry: It’s hard to fight worry, but you can fight pride. If you rid yourself of pride, you will rid yourself of worry.
Wearing pride leads to sin: Satan works a lot like Netflix…he learns what sin you like and puts more of it in front of you. When you feed something, it grows. When you starve something, it dies. As God gets bigger in your life, your struggles will get smaller (John 3:30).
Your struggles are not unique. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
Wearing humility is always important: Humility looks good on everyone. Humility isn’t just attractive, it’s powerful. We receive God’s favor, are protected by the hand of God, can trust His timing, are not anxious, know the love of God, can resist the devil, have a right view of sin, have eternal glory, have restored resolve and knows where the power lies.
Everywhere you go has a dress code. Humility is the dress code of God’s Kingdom.
Examine yourself: What can you do in the next week to actively “take off” pride? What sin are you prone to feed rather than starve? How are you doing at feeding your appetite for God?
Are you abiding with Christ, reading your Bible and praying?
Who is someone you know that wears humility well? How (what tangible examples) do they wear it well? Pick one way you can “put on” humility.
