To a Grateful Nation…Local Veterans honored on Veterans Day
The area, like everywhere else across the nation, took time on Wednesday to honor its Veterans. Several events were held in Galveston County, but the biggest took place in Hitchcock, where Navy veteran and Santa Fe businessman Fidencio Leija helped put together a Veterans Day celebration, named Operation Honor Our Local Veterans, at Galveston County Fairgrounds that began with a morning prayer breakfast and included a Vietnam 50th Anniversary Luncheon and awards ceremony. The celebration also had a resource fair to help the area’s Veterans and was capped off by a fireworks show.
Army Purple Heart recipient J.P. Lang was the keynote speaker for the evening.
Donations from customed designed flags resulted in Operation Honor Our Local Veterans over $1,300.
