Artist-instructor-author Albert Handell will lead a Galveston Art League workshop from Jan. 18-21 at the Galveston Art League Gallery. All skill levels are invited to participate.

Nationally acclaimed artist Albert Handell will be the instructor at a four-day painting workshop for artists – beginners to advanced – at the Galveston Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in downtown Galveston. The workshop will begin Tuesday Jan. 18 and conclude Friday Jan. 21.

Each morning, during sessions from 9:30am to noon, Handell will conduct demonstrations in oil paint. Attendees will paint in during the afternoons, using oils or the medium of their choice; afternoon sessions will last from 1 to 5 p.m. During all four days of the workshop, Handell will give individualized instruction to every student.

The cost is $750 for Galveston Art League members (the nonprofit organization’s tax-deductible membership fees start at $40 per year and you may join on www.GalvestonArtLeague.com). Tuition is $8 for people who are not members of the Art League. Please email gallery2117@gmail.com if you wish to join the Art League ahead of the workshop and have questions. A $200 fully refundable tuition deposit is required to register for the workshop.

All workshop registrations and receipts will be taken care of by Handell’s office (www.alberthandellstudio.com) – you may text 505-603-1524 or email alberthandell@msn.com. Handell’s team accepts all credit cards, and you will be emailed a receipt. For further details or answers to questions about the workshop, please contact the Handell office directly.

If you need help with overnight accommodations, contact Art League Workshop Director Nancy House by email at nghouse1@verizon.net or via cellphone at 281-451-5814.

Students will need to bring the following supplies with them.

Surface: The suggested sizes are 10 by 14 inches to 18 by 24 inches.

For pastels artists: If your favored medium is pastels, bring all the pastels that you have and the pastel papers that you like to paint on, plus a few lightweight drawing boards (for instance, foam core or gator board). Handell likes to use pastels on the U-Art sanded paper, both 500 and 600 grits.

Other media: If painting in another medium, please bring all the paints and supplies that you will need.

The 107-year-old Galveston Art League was created to advance visual arts and art education in the greater Galveston County region. Holding workshops is one vehicle for the all-volunteer Art League to fulfill its mission. Most of the workshops held by the organization are low-cost and some are free.

The Galveston Art League Art League Gallery debuts a new exhibit monthly. Nine exhibits a year are by members, and three are juried competitions that are open to nonmembers as well as members.
