DICKINSON senior Byron Broussard
became the second straight District
24-6A defensive back to earn first team
all-state honors from the Associated
Press Sports Editors when the 6A team
was announced last week. Broussard
received the accolade following a season
where he recorded 78 tackles, eight
interceptions and eight pass breakups
while helping the Gators finish with an
8-3 record and a trip to the area round of
the playoffs.
Clear Springs’ Christian Waller received
a first team all-state nod at defensive
back last season.
Broussard was one of four 24-6A performers
to earn recognition from ASPE.
Fellow Dickinson defensive back D.J.
Warnell was named honorable mention
along with Gators running back
Myles Lewis. Clear Brook receiver Caleb
Chapman was also selected honorable
mention.
Lewis and Chapman were among two
of the area players who signed on last
week’s early national signing day for
college football, as Lewis signed his letter
of intent to play at Houston Baptist
University and Chapman firming his
commitment to Texas A&M, where he
will now be a teammate of Dickinson
receiver Montel Parker, who also signed
last Wednesday.
Gators defensive back Terry Keys committed
to SMU, while Clear Springs
receiver/return specialist Peyton Sawyer
inked his letter of intent to University
of Houston. Clear Brook receiver Mark
Milton also made his intentions final
when the Wolverines standout officially
committed to Baylor.
Players currently uncommitted will continue
their search leading to the more
traditional national signing day, which will
be held on February 7.
