THE WEATHER could have an impact on the high school sports schedule as the
back end of the week features the usual share of Friday night hoops and soccer.
Meanwhile, the Rockets will taste the national spotlight against two the best teams
in the NBA.
TODAY, WEDNESDAY: Usually an open date for high school athletics, don’t be
surprised if the day is used to make up for games that could be delayed due to the
inclement weather expected to hit the area early Tuesday morning. Temps are projected
to be at or below freezing on Tuesday and could also include freezing rain and
the prospect of snow.
TOMORROW, THURSDAY: Tournament play in both boys and girls soccer start
throughout the area, with Clear Falls and Friendswood’s boys teams taking part
in the Battleground Showcase in Galena Park, while the girls of Clear Creek,
Friendswood and Santa Fe will be involved in the Clear Lake Varsity Tournament.
The Clear Springs girls will be in Georgetown as part of the Governor’s Cup tourney.
Each of the tournaments will run through Saturday.
The Rockets are at home as they welcome the Timberwolves in a nationally-televised
game on TNT beginning at 7:00pm. It is the first meeting between the teams
this season.
FRIDAY: Boys basketball play begins at 7:00pm with Clear Brook at Dickinson,
Clear Falls at Clear Creek, Clear Lake at Clear Springs, Friendswood at Alvin and
Galveston Ball at Santa Fe. The area’s state-ranked boys teams tip at 7:30pm as
Hitchcock hosts Rice Consolidated and La Marque travels to Brazos.
Girls hoops action starts at 6:15pm with state-ranked Hitchcock at home against
Rice Consolidated and La Marque at Brazos. Alvin at Friendswood, Clear Creek at
at Clear Falls, Clear Springs at Clear Lake, Dickinson at Clear Brook and Santa Fe
at Galveston Ball each start at 7:00.
Three games are on tap in boys soccer, with Baytown Lee at Clear Brook and
Dickinson at Texas City both starting at 7:30pm, while Clear Springs takes on
Brazoswood at Challenger/Columbia Stadium at 7:30pm.
The day is also the first day for softball tryouts, as the season will begin in early
February.
SATURDAY: The Rockets play their third of seven straight nationally televised
games when they meet the Warriors at Toyota Center beginning at 7:30pm. KTRK-
13 will air the third meeting between the two powerhouses with Houston winning at
Golden State on October 17 before the defending World Champions returned the
favor with a victory in Houston on January 4.
