In the aftermath of the shooting at Santa Fe High School, a lot of us are asking:
what can we do? We want to help in any way we can. We are attending blood
drives and fundraising events, but nothing seems like enough. With this in mind,
Bake Me A Dream in Texas City has come up with a way to help Santa Fe High
School and the entire Santa Fe community.
Together with Anabel Villarreal, a custom decorator, the bakery had been designing
and making ribbons and selling them all Monday morning. The owner
of Bake Me A Dream—Brittany Garcia-O’Connor—told me that the ribbons cost
$5 a piece and “we are also selling buttons at $3 a piece and necklaces at $5 a
piece.” The bakery is normally not open on Monday, but they kept it open on this
past Monday for people to purchase ribbons, buttons and necklaces. “We made
$600 between 9am and noon,” O’Connor told me.
When I spoke to O’Connor she told me that they hadn’t completely decided
where the proceeds received would go. “We want to make sure it goes to a legitimate
fundraiser,” she told me. She told me that they are planning to call Santa
Fe High School to work with them to find the best place to send these proceeds.
But you can be rest assured that the money received from the sale of these ribbons,
buttons and necklaces will go towards a fundraiser helping the Santa Fe
High School and the Santa Fe community.
“These are heartfelt times,” O’Connor told me. “This is a time where we need
to come together as a community.” A lot of you, as I mentioned earlier in this
piece, may be wondering how you can help. Here is a way. Bake Me A Dream
will be selling these ribbons, necklaces and buttons throughout the week so
make your way over to 1619 6th Street North in Texas City to make a purchase.
You can also call the bakery at 409-229-4859 for more information.
