AREA SPORTS FANS have no excuse when it comes to finding something to
watch this weekend. From high school volleyball to the Astros’ playoff push, there
is more than enough to feed off of the buffet of action available.
WEDNESDAY: Dallas Keuchel (11-10, 3.57 ERA) takes the mound for the Astros
in the finale of a three-game series against the Mariners beginning at 7:10pm.
As of press time, the Mariners had not made a decision as to who would get the
start. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will begin its coverage with the pregame show
at 6:30pm.
THURSDAY: As usual, the day will be filled with a host of junior varsity football
games throughout the area, as the future stars of Friday night continue to hone
their skills on various stadiums in Galveston County.
FRIDAY: Week four of the high school football season will see Galveston Ball,
Texas City and Santa Fe each having open weeks before starting district play
next weekend. Among those playing, Clear Falls at Bellaire, CE King at Clear
Brook, Katy Tomkins at Clear Creek and Katy Taylor at Dickinson will each kick
off at 7:00pm. La Marque at Columbia and Hitchcock at Scarborough will both
have 7:30pm kickoffs.
In high school volleyball action, Clear Brook at Dickinson begin at 4:15pm, while
Hitchcock at Danbury start their match at 5:00pm. Clear Creek goes out of district
for a match at fellow state powerhouse Kingwood beginning at 5:30pm.
Clear Lake is at Clear Falls at 6:00pm and the evening wraps up with Galveston
Ball at Baytown Lee, Crosby at Friendswood and Santa Fe at Texas City. Each
match begins at 6:30pm.
Friendswood faces off against visiting Texas City as the boys and girls tennis
squads compete in district action. The two schools will also be among the cross
country teams that will be involved in the Knight Invitational at The Sports Plex
in League City.
The Astros continue to push closer to another American League West championship
as Charlie Morton (15-3, 3.15 ERA) gets the start in the opener of a weekend
series against the Angels, who will counter with Andrew Heaney (9-9, 3.97 ERA)
when the teams collide at 7:10pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will have coverage
beginning with the pregame show at 6:30pm.
SATURDAY: Clear Springs welcomes state-ranked Katy to Challenger-Columbia
Stadium as the Chargers wrap up non-district play. Kickoff will be at 6:00pm.
A host of area college football teams will be in action throughout the day, beginning
with Sam Houston State at Nicholls State at 3:00pm. Prairie View at Arkansas-Pine
Bluff, Southeastern Louisiana at Lamar and Rice at Southern Mississippi
each begin at 6:00pm, while Houston hosts Texas Southern at 7:00pm.
Justin Verlander (16-9, 2.67 ERA) continues his Cy Young Award push when he
makes the start for the Astros against the Angels starting at 6:10pm. Rookie Jaime
Barria (10-9, 3.61 ERA) gets the nod for Los Angeles when AT&T Sportsnet
takes the audience from the pregame show at 5:30pm into the contest.
