CELEBRATING THE STARS
May 2 was National Day of Prayer and so it was quite fitting that the day began with a gathering of outstanding students and teachers at the annual, Principals’ Honors Breakfast where students shared the impact certain teachers have had on their scholastic careers and the Top 5 % of both La Marque and Texas City High Schools were honored for their achievements.
Stephanie Doyle, President of Foundation for the Future and Christina Hall-Payne, the Foundation’s Executive Director opened the morning with recognition of special guests and supporters of the Foundation and then later, presented scholarships to participants of the Charles Doyle LEADS program.
Everyone attending received a booklet featuring each student and teacher. Along with a list of the activities and accomplishments of each student, there was something written about their teacher. The comments were quite personal, full of genuine emotion, challenges met, fears overcome, moments of humor and inspiration. Each teacher and honoree was called to the podium and give the opportunity to speak to the students about the pride their teachers felt in their accomplishments and the impact knowing these remarkable young people and teaching them had had on each teacher.
These are not small moments. These are impressions that will carry these young people through their college years and sustain each teacher as they greet another and yet another group of young minds. Honoring that on teacher who played a significant role in the development of that young person is such an important rite of passage for both parties and all too often goes unspoken.
Last year The Post honored the Foundation’s Hall of Fame Recipients individually and this year we want to shine that light on the teachers who do so much outside the classroom, spend their own money for student supplies, counsel them through difficult times, serve as role models for absentee parents, attend all the plays, cheer at all the games, mentor special needs, encourage, rescue, joke with, inspire, and listen, listen, listen with their whole hearts, their whole minds, committed to being present and purposeful and involved.
