Information about Remembrance Activities for Media

“As we approach the one-year mark of the unimaginable tragedy we experienced on May 18, 2018, we ask that our media partners be respectful of our staff, students and community. “
This was the beginning of a request from Santa Fe High School directed at the media to attempt to control the  unavoidable onslaught of “journalists” looking to cover the anniversary of that terrible day. There is something predatory about the media and their pursuit of a story in the aftermath of a tragedy. Certainly there are conversations that need to be had about how we protect our young people; about responsible gun laws; about spreading outrageous and inaccurate information through social media. The question though seems to be; at what expense to the victims and survivors?

There is no doubt that information overload has become a dangerous factor in the examination of these events. Wild stories fly across the internet with abandon and the more outrageous, the more inflammatory, the more likely to be repeated. There is a case to be made for more responsible journalism and Santa Fe is to be commended for being proactive in the defense of their citizens. That said there is a case to be made as well for responsible consumers of the information that is available to us.

Yes, Santa Fe became a national story a year ago and understanding that there is a part to play in finding solutions to this recurring nightmare is a part of the price that is paid when tragedy strikes. But here, at home, we know there is unspoken pain, unresolved guilt and regret, and unimaginable, ongoing loss. Let us be mindful, keeping our own counsel, protecting our neighbors from prying curiosity seekers. So that the city of Santa Fe can have their time to deal with their grief; in their own way; in their own time; uninterrupted by those who will never understand unless, God forbid, they find themselves walking that same path.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29
