Area high school golfers swing for glory at boys’ state tournament
OTHER THAN THE ASTROS, THE week doesn’t offer much as the school year approaches its
conclusion. The good news is that three area high schools will be represented in the boys’ golf
state championships out in Georgetown.
The week could see at least one area high school baseball team still competing in the state
playoffs as Clear Springs, Dickinson and Santa Fe each entered Friday with an opportunity to
advance to the regional semifinals.
Sunday: Brad Peacock (4-2, 4.01 ERA) takes the mound for the Astros in the series finale against
the Red Sox beginning at 12:05pm. Boston will give the ball to ace Chris Sale (1-5, 4.02 ERA)
who comes into the game having struck out 41 batters over his last 21 innings. AT&T Sportsnet
Southwest starts the pregame show at 11:30am.
Monday: District 24-6A champions Clear Falls will compete with 11 other schools to win the 6A
boys’ golf team title, which begins at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown. The Knights are
represented by Christian Hernandez, Preston Holmes, Ethan Dahl, Mick Foley and Cameron
Curtis. Individual medalists Niko Nebout of Clear Springs and Jacob Salazar of Clear Creek will
also be in Georgetown chasing gold during the two-day event.
The Astros return home to deal with more Sox, in this case, the White Sox, who will toss Manny
Banuelos (2-3, 7.26 ERA) against Houston’s Wade Miley (4-2, 3.51 ERA). The game begins at
7:10pm, with AT&T Sportsnet Southwest starting its coverage at 6:30pm.
Tuesday: Justin Verlander (7-1, 2.38 ERA) looks for his fourth straight win in as many starts
when he opposes White Sox righty Dylan Covey (0-2, 4.41 ERA) beginning at 7:10pm. AT&T
Sportsnet will open the evening with the pregame show at 6:30pm.
