THE SOUNDS OF football and volleyball both make their 2019 debuts as area schools get back into the swing of things. The regular season tips on Tuesday for volleyball while daybreak on Monday opens the door for football. That means the Astros – even with their big trade deadline moves – will have to take a back seat.

Seattle hands the ball to Tommy Milone (1-5, 4.39 ERA), who looks for his first win since May 27. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest begins its coverage at 12:30pm with its pregame show.

Monday: Sunrise welcomes the start of high school football season as a host of area teams hit the field for their first workouts of the 2019 campaign. Coaches will find out who put in work and who didn’t during the sessions. The regular season begins on August 30.

The morning will also see a host of high school volleyball scrimmages as team will make their final tune-ups before the start of the regular season. Dickinson is at Santa Fe beginning at 9:00am, while Texas City is at Pasadena High for a trio of scrimmages that start at 9:40am. Clear Creek is at Memorial taking part in a scrimmage that includes St. Agnes and Langham Creek at 10:00am, while Friendswood is among the teams participating in a scrimmage at Clear Falls that starts at 10:00am.

Tuesday: The high school volleyball regular season gets underway with Dickinson at Baytown Sterling at 4:30pm, followed by Bridgeland at Clear Brook and Clear Creek at Seven Lakes each starting at 5:30pm. Hitchcock at Anahuac and Santa Fe at Barbers Hill are both 6:00pm starts while Friendswood at Clear Lake and Alvin at Texas City close out the opening day schedule.

The Astros start rookie Jose Urquidy (1-1, 5.87) in the opener against the Rockies, who will go with German Marquez (10-5, 4.68 ERA) when the teams collide at 7:10pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will start its coverage with the pregame show at 6:30pm.
