THE TEXANS WILL ATTEMPT to get their first win of the regular season while the Astros move closer to locking up an American League playoff berth. However, the Tuesday night slate of volleyball matches are the highlight of the area, with Santa Fe at Friendswood the most intriguing match of the evening.
Sunday: The Texans seek to rebound from Monday night’s heartbreaking loss at the Saints when they welcome their AFC South rivals from Jacksonville to NRG Stadium for the 2019 home opener. The Jaguars lost their season opener, falling 40-26 at home against the Chiefs. KHOU 11 will have the game live at 12:00pm.
Since the Texans are home, that means Cowboys fans without NFL Sunday Ticket will have to go elsewhere to watch their team visit the Redskins in the latest installment of their decades old rivalry. Dallas topped the Giants 35-17 last week while Washington squandered a 17-0 lead on the way to losing to Philadelphia 32-27.
The Astros conclude a three-game set at Kansas City as Wade Miley (13-5, 3.74 ERA) looks to snap out of a two-game funk that has seen him allow 12 earned runs while retiring one (and it’s not a typo) batter in that span. The Royals will counter with Jakob Junis, who comes into the contest with a 9-13 record and 5.06 ERA. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will come on the air with the pregame show at 12:30pm, with the game starting at 1:15pm.
Monday: It’s never too soon to get the jump on the 2020 softball season, which is why fall league games will begin at Texas City’s Lady Stings Field from 5:30pm to 9:00pm. Texas City, along with a number of other area programs, will use the fall slate to keep their players in tune along with unearthing a potential all-district talent or two.
Tuesday: The usual evening for volleyball action will have all 11 high schools participating. Matches begin at 5:30pm when South Houston visits La Marque, followed by Dickinson at Clear Creek, Clear Brook at Clear Falls, Katy Tompkins at Clear Springs and Hitchcock at Danbury. The 6:30pm slate of games will have Texas City at Baytown Lee, Santa Fe at Friendswood and Galena Park at Galveston Ball.
A trio of District 24-6A team tennis matches are also slated. Clear Lake at Clear Springs and Clear Brook at Dickinson each start at 3:00pm. Clear Falls visits Clear Creek at 3:30pm.
It’s back to Minute Maid Park for the Astros, who welcome the Rangers for the final time this season. Justin Verlander (18-6. 2.58 ERA) will look to get closer to both 20 wins and 300 strikeouts when he opposes Texas starter Lance Lynn (14-10, 3.72 ERA). Game time starts at 7:10pm with AT&T Sportsnet Southwest starting its coverage at 6:30pm with the pregame show.
