Road to state begins for swimming, diving competitors

THE HIGHLIGHT OF A BUSY SPORTS WEEKEND will have area swimming and diving teams competing for district championships on Friday and Saturday. The high school basketball schedule is fairly quiet, but two of the area’s state-ranked teams will be in action.

Wednesday: The Rockets welcome the Nuggets for a 7:00pm tip as they seek to be as successful as they were the previous meeting against them. Houston handed Denver a 130-104 defeat in Toyota Center on New Year’s Eve. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will air the game live, starting with the pregame show at 6:30pm.

There is high school wrestling on the docket, as Klein Oak visits Clear Brook at 5:00pm. Clear Creek is at Episcopal and Clear Springs visits Katy Taylor, with both matches also slated for 5:00pm.

Thursday: There are no high school varsity games/matches on the schedule.

Friday: A somewhat light boys’ high school basketball schedule will have state-ranked Dickinson at Clear Creek, Clear Brook at Clear Falls, Goose Creek Memorial at Friendswood and Texas City at Galveston Ball each starting at 7:00pm. Danbury visits Hitchcock at 7:30pm.

In high school girls’ basketball, Danbury at state-ranked Hitchcock starts the action at 6:15pm while Clear Falls at Clear Brook, Clear Creek at Dickinson, Friendswood at Goose Creek Memorial and Galveston Ball at Texas City each tip off at 7:00pm.

The boys’ high school soccer schedule will have Clear Brook at Clear Creek, Dickinson at Clear Lake and Clear Falls at Clear Springs. All three matches start at 7:30pm.

The girls’ high school soccer slate has four games on tap with Clear Creek at Clear Brook, Clear Springs at Clear Falls, Clear Lake at Dickinson and Stafford at Texas City each beginning at 7:30pm.

The road to the state swimming and diving championships begin with district clashes in both District 24-6A and District 15-5A thru Saturday. District 24-6A will decide on its regional-bound performers at Texas City’s Doyle Natatorium, while District 15-5A will hold its meet at Cook Natatorium in Sugar Land.

Texas City’s tennis team will be among the participants at the Kingwood Tournament, which will run thru Saturday afternoon.

Saturday: Santa Fe plays host to a area powerlifting meet that will also include Dickinson and Texas City. Meanwhile, the La Marque powerlifting squad makes the trip to Splendora for a meet.

The high school wrestling slate will have Clear Creek at Clear Lake beginning at 9:00am. Clear Falls will be among the schools taking part in the Cy Ridge Invitational while Clear Springs competes in a tri-meet that includes host school Morton Ranch and Cinco Ranch.
