There’s a familiar statement that I often hear that goes something like this: You can’t move forward in life looking in the rearview mirror. When we stay stuck on our past, whether victories or failures, we are not able to fully see our future and where we are supposed to be heading.
Speaking of future… If you know me, then you probably know what scripture I’m about to quote next… Jeremiah 29:11! The amplified version tells us this: “For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you, ‘says the Lord, ‘plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster to give you a future and a hope. Do you know that everything in front of you is bigger than anything behind you?
This is why it’s important that we do not hold on to past victories as if that’s all we’re ever going to do for the Kingdom. God wants each of us to leave an impression of our existence in His name, to bring people to know Him. We are created, not to take up space, but to do the work that God has placed inside of each of us. Philippians 1:6 says it this way, I am convinced and confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will [continue to] perfect and complete it until the day of Christ Jesus [the time of His return]. The good work that God 22has placed on the inside of you, He will perfect and complete it, until the coming of Jesus Christ.
So, trusting that what you do is ordained by God, He will never stop making it better and better. He will never stop imparting wisdom into you and will do so by growing you and perfecting His good work. We don’t have to stay stuck on past victories or our past failures. God has so much more planned. So much more in store.
There are so many more people that need to be introduced to His love. No matter what we see for our own future, it’s never going to be as big as what God has for us. Isaiah 55: 8-9 confirms this: For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts. God’s vision for us is always bigger than we can imagine or even think about. This is why it’s important that we understand that our past failures cannot stop us from being used by God. Our past mishaps doesn’t mean that God will just throw in the towel regarding us. Your past mistakes can make you feel small, maybe even inadequate. And it may just be people that won’t let you live it down in addition to your own condemning thoughts. But can I tell you that when you place your trust in God and believe that what His word says is true for you, you will accomplish everything that He has planned for you.
Step by step. The good work will be perfected and it will produce good fruit in your life and in the life of others.
