THERE WILL BE NO BASEBALL. HOT DOGS and apple pie will require social distancing.
Independence Day is still on the calendar on Saturday, but the coronavirus pandemic has played havoc with the traditional events throughout the county. Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s decision to slow down things last Friday meant that mass crowds that usually celebrate America’s birthday will have to do so on their own.
Texas City, League City and Galveston each cancelled their July 4 events, while Santa Fe’s all-day celebration at Runge Park is reduced to a 9:15pm fireworks show.
“The number of COVID-19 infections is rising at an alarmingly high rate. We have registered over 400 positive cases to date in our City,” per a post on the city’s Facebook page. “Since we have seen an upward trend in cases in our area and with serious consideration for our citizens, the City leadership has decided to cancel the 4th of July fireworks show and festivities.
“This cancellation is necessary to slow the spread in our community. It is vital that we protect ourselves as much as possible. Remain at home if you are able to. Avoid touching your face. Wash and sanitize your hands frequently.”
Mainland City Centre’s plans for a two-day Independence Day celebration were dashed when it was announced over the weekend that it would be cancelled.
Despite the disappointment, many saluted the difficult call to shut down what have been area staples for decades.
“I know this was an extremely difficult decision but thank you for putting the health of our community first,” said Santa Fe’s Denise Dobson to Santa Fe’s City Hall. “I believe you all made the right choice.”
“it’s a tough decision but I think it’s the right one,” added Nicole Frantz-Zornes.
The feeling wasn’t mutual in the eyes of some, who felt a sense of frustration over the way the pandemic has dampened yet another event in the area.
“How long until like every other virus, we reset the count for the season?” said Texas City’s Tommy Lee Bear.
Area restaurants began their resets on Monday as dine-in services were reduced back to 50% capacity. Bars were shut down on Friday with the exception of delivery and take-out.
