Tropical Storm Beta was slated to make its way through the area late Tuesday/early Wednesday, but much of Galveston County endured a sampling of it on Sunday and Monday. High winds and rain hammered Jamaica Beach and Kemah, resulting in both cities facing flooding conditions. By the time Beta is expected to finally depart the area on Thursday, the county could have received as much as 10-12 inches of rain.
Schools were closed on Monday as officials — already challenged with the national pandemic — chose to play on the side of caution.
With more than two months remaining before the end of the 2020 hurricane season, Beta may not be the last time the Galveston County portion of the Gulf Coast finds itself under siege from Mother Nature.
