Sometimes you can have an idea for a column, only to
discover too late (like at deadline) that it just isn’t going
to happen. Some things aren’t meant to be.
That’s what happened to me this week. I had an
idea for a topic: funny holiday pet stories. I planned to
get on the Internet and do a little searching, then try
to entertain you with the best stories I found. Unfortunately,
I’m still looking for those stories. It isn’t that
there weren’t any online, it’s just that they weren’t all
that funny.
I googled funny Christmas pet stories, funny Christmas
cat stories, funny holiday dog stories . . . well, I’m
sure you get the idea. But nothing I could find met my
criteria.
Next I got Siri to find me funny Chanukah pet stories.
Unfortunately this was equally unsuccessful.
There was one bright spot, however. While roaming
through Chanukah pet-related items, I came across
Adam Sandler’s amazing hit, “The Chanukah Song.”
This is a genuinely funny tune, and Sandler put out
four different versions of it. (There may be more, but
that’s all I found.)
If you haven’t heard any of these versions, go on line
and pull up “The Chanukah Song.”
You need to listen carefully to the lyrics
or you might miss some of the funniest
parts. One of my favorites is “Instead of
one day of presents, We get eight crazy
nights!” Then Sandler proceeds to identify
a bunch of entertainers who are not
known for being Jewish but actually are.
It’s a clever song – all four versions
of it. It is not anti-Jewish or offensive.
Sandler himself is Jewish and is just
having fun here. It’s funny in the same
way that “Grandma Got Run Over By A
Reindeer” is funny.
And you can always check out those
holiday pet videos if holiday shopping and preparations
are getting you down. By that time you’ll prob ably
think anything is humorous.
Hi, ho, ho!
