Clear Springs’ Kenadee Pope and Clear Falls’ Kyra Respress are the area’s latest student-athletes to commit to play collegiately. Pope will play volleyball at Southern Arkansas University while Respress will head to Lewis University as part of the school’s swimming and diving team.

La Marque’s Malik Holmes advanced to the state powerlifting finals in Abilene, capturing the 220 class crown in last weekend’s Region 4, Division 2 meet in Baytown. Teammate Keanan Gatson finished fourth in the 123 class, while fellow Cougars Christian Middleton (198 class) and Russell Pickney (165 class) each finished third.

Overall, La Marque finished fourth in team competition with 15 total points.

Hitchcock’s Kelvon York-Norman will represent the Bulldogs in the state finals after he placed second in the 220 class in the Region 4, Division 3 meet, which was also held in Baytown.

The additions of Holmes and York-Norman gives the area 11 powerlifters who will compete for the state title on March 23. Dickinson will have six participants while Texas City will have three.
