Mission accomplished, but LMWTC Little League to continue signing up players
THERE WILL BE baseball for La Marque/West Texas City Little League in 2019, as they were able
to get over 60 players signed up for the upcoming season during a registration drive at Bobby
Beach on Sunday afternoon. The league will lose its independence after 71 years as they will
schedule games against other area leagues, but the fact they will be is the biggest takeaway
from what has been a challenging two-month stretch.
Bolstered by a $5,000 donation from Woodmen Life Insurance Company, the league was able to
sign up players whose families did not have to pay for the 2019 season. The financial issue was
a huge barrier to why the league had less than 25 players prior to Sunday afternoon.
League vice-president Mike Wev said the league will continue to sign up players even after the
season begins later this month.
The league also had to overcome the theft of over $4,000 of equipment before Christmas, but a
spirited drive from the community and other area businesses helped the league replace its
losses.
Finding adults willing to take the time to work with the kids during the season is the next
challenge for the league. Those interested in devoting time to the La Marque Little League can
visit the league’s Facebook page or call league president D.J. Arvie at (409) 996-4843.
