Sprint to Austin reaches final turn for HS track & field
WHILE THE END OF the high school baseball regular season reaches its end, the highlight for
the last weekend of April will be the region track and field championships as a host of area
athletes will bid for a chance to advance to next month’s state finals in Austin. The end of the
week also includes the NFL Draft, where both the Texans and Cowboys will seek to improve
their chances at reaching the Super Bowl.
Wednesday: While the Twins have not decided who to start, there’s no such issue for the
Astros, who will go with Justin Verlander (3-0, 3.00 ERA) in the series finale against Minnesota
beginning at 7:10pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest begins coverage at 6:30pm with the pregame
show.
Depending on the outcome of Monday’s Game 4, the Rockets will either be in preparations for
a Western Conference Semifinal against the Warriors or playing a Game 5 at home against the
Jazz. If there is a Game 5, the start time will be announced either late Monday night or early
Tuesday morning.
Thursday: A pair of struggling aces meet at Minute Maid Park when Astros hurler Gerrit Cole (1-
3, 5.22 ERA) meets former Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber (2-2, 5.88 ERA) beginning at
7:10pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will air the game starting with the pregame show at
6:30pm.
The NFL’s version of Christmas Day arrives as the first round of the 2019 draft commences from
Nashville. The Texans will have the 23 rd overall selection while the Cowboys – who traded their
first-rounder in last season’s trade for receiver Amari Cooper – will have to wait until late in the
second round (58 th overall) on Friday to join the fun. KTRK-13, ESPN and NFL Network will each
air live coverage.
Friday: The high school baseball regular season comes to a conclusion with Dickinson at Alvin,
Clear Springs at Clear Creek, Texas City at Galveston Ball and Sweeny at La Marque each
starting at 6:00pm. Goose Creek Memorial at Friendswood, Santa Fe at Galena Park and
Danbury at Hitchcock will each get underway at 7:00pm.
State track and field invitations await in the Region III finals. Both 6A and 5A will hold their
regional finals at Challenger/Columbia Stadium in League City, while the 4A meet will be held at
Bowers Stadium on the campus of Sam Houston State University. Meanwhile, the 3A regional
finals will be at Midway High School in Waco.
The state championship will be held on May 10-11 on the campus of the University of Texas.
Coming off one of the worst starts of his career, Collin McHugh (3-2, 4.78 ERA) takes the bump
for the Astros in the second game of the weekend series against the Indians, who will counter
with Trevor Bauer (2-1, 2.20 ERA). First pitch is slated for 7:10pm with AT&T Sportsnet
Southwest getting the ball rolling with the pregame show at 6:30pm.
Saturday: It’s an early start for the Astros, who will go with Brad Peacock (2-0, 3.94 ERA) when
they take on Shane Bieber (2-1, 3.47 ERA) and the Indians beginning at 3:10pm. AT&T Sportsnet
Southwest’s pregame show starts at 2:30pm while FS1 will have the game as part of its national
package.
The Dynamo seek to continue their strong start when they welcome the Columbus Crew FC to
BBVA Compass Stadium for a 7:30pm match. KUBE-57 will have the live broadcast.
