WHILE VOLLEYBALL continues its early portion of the regular season, area high school football teams get one final scrimmage in before next week’s openers. It’s also time for bragging rights among Texans and Cowboys fans as Texas pride is on the line in Arlington on Saturday evening.
Wednesday: Justin Verlander (15-4, 2.81 ERA) gets another opportunity to start against his old Tigers teammates when the Astros hit the field at 7:10pm. Detroit counters with Daniel Norris (3-10, 4.82 ERA) in the third game of the four-game set that AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will air live following the pregame show at 6:30pm.
Thursday: The final tune-ups for the start of the high school football season starts with Dickinson at Friendswood, Houston Yates at Hitchcock, La Marque at North Brook and Clear Creek at Santa Fe each beginning at 7:00pm.
Tournament season continues for high school volleyball teams with Clear Falls at the Langham Creek Tournament, Clear Springs at the VolleyPalooza Tourney in Austin, Dickinson at the Forney ISD Tournament, Friendswood at the Leander Tournament, Galveston Ball at George Ranch Tourney, Hitchcock at the TBA Tournament and Texas City at the Splendora Tournament. La Marque will also be in action when the Cougars are at South Houston beginning at 6:30pm.
Gerrit Cole (14-5, 2.87 ERA) is scheduled to return to the mound when the Astros close out their four-game set against the Tigers beginning at 7:10pm. Jordan Zimmerman (1-8. 6.66 ERA) gets the call for Detroit. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest begins its coverage at 6:30pm with the pregame show.
Friday: Non-tournament volleyball action will have Dickinson at Forney at 5:30pm, with College Station at Clear Creek, Clear Brook at Cy Creek and Columbia at Texas City each starting at 6:00pm, while La Marque dives into tournament play as part of the Bay Area Christian Tournament.
The high school football scrimmage schedule will have Galveston Ball at Houston Chavez starting at 6:00pm, followed by Dawson at Clear Brook, Clear Falls at La Porte and Brazoswood at Texas City each starting at 7:00pm.
Fresh off his 200th career victory, Zack Greinke (13-4, 2.84 ERA) takes the mound for the Astros in the opener of a weekend set against the Angels, who will counter with rookie Jose Suarez (2-4, 6.75 ERA). AT&T Sportsnet Southwest starts its coverage with the pregame show at 6:30pm followed by the game at 7:10pm.
Saturday: Wade Miley (11-4, 3.11 ERA) gets his turn in the rotation when the Astros meet the Angels in the middle game of the series. Los Angeles will turn to another rookie hurler, Griffin Canning (5-6, 4.58 ERA) at 6:10pm. The game will be aired on AT&T Sportsnet Southwest following the pregame show at 5:30pm.
Try telling Texans fans that the annual preseason game against the Cowboys is just that: a preseason game. The in-state rivals square off at AT&T Stadium at 6:00pm in a game that will see both teams use their starters extensively. Both ABC 13 and NFL Network will have the game live.
