Friendswood star projects as potential 1st round pick in 2021 MLB Draft
FRIENDSWOOD HIGH SCHOOL senior Izaac Pacheco is ranked among the top 20 prospects for the 2021 Major League Baseball draft. MLB.com rated the infielder 11th overall, making him the area’s highest-ranked prospect since former Galveston Ball and current Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Williams prior to the 2012 MLB Draft.
MLB.com’s analysis of Pacheco: Another Perfect Game National participant, Pacheco has long stood out because of the damage he can do from the left side of the plate. There’s a ton of present, and even more future, power with excellent bat speed. He has smooth and athletic actions defensively, with plenty of arm, giving him the chance to play short. If the Texas A&M recruit outgrows shortstop, he could be an outstanding fit at third base with the offensive profile to match.
Pacheco’s size and power potential has led some scouts to compare him as a left-handed hitting version of former Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, a five-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner. Tulowitzki batted .290 and hit 225 homers in a 13-year career (2006-2019) that also saw him also play with the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees.
