The Galveston Art League Gallery’s new exhibit, running Sept. 5-27, is 104 works of art that were accepted into its Fall 2020 Juried Show. The gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in downtown Galveston, is open from 12:00pm to 6:00pm Saturdays and Sundays. To view and purchase these same works 24/7, please visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com and click on the September show link on the homepage.
Artworks in the current exhibit include framed, ready-to-hang paintings, photography, and mixed-media works as well as 3-D pieces such as sculpture, pottery, art dolls, and wood carvings. Juried shows are open to member and non-member artists, and most of the items are for sale.
The iconic seaside watercolor, “Great Day Galveston” by painter Jackie Liddell, received the $750 McGivney Award. It was chosen by a Rosenberg Library representative and will become part of the library’s art collection.
Taylor Clendennen, a Houston artist, judged the Art League’s Fall 2020 Juried Show and determined which entries to accept and hang in the gallery. She selected pieces to receive the Best of Show, first- and second-place honors, and honorable-mention awards.
Painter Jerry Bachman won Best of Show, a $300 award, for his acrylic “Red Birds Kiss.” First-place awards are: works on canvas/panel, Peggy Kingsbury’s “Remembering Toulouse-Lautrec”; works on paper, “Distant Lands Orange” by Ariane Edmundson; photography, Matt Logmann’s “The Last Time”; 3-D/wall-hung category: Leticia Schumacher’s “Latin Beauty”; and works in 3-D, “The Mad Hatter” by Marilyn Huston.
Founded in 1914, the nonprofit Galveston Art League hosts three juried shows per year as part of its mission to nurture appreciation of visual arts and art education in Galveston County and beyond. Other activities by the league, operated solely by volunteers, include hosting nine member-only art shows per year, offering low-cost and free workshops to artists of all ages, and promoting local artists through marketing and public relations efforts.
The Art League is supported by donations; memberships and sponsorships; entry fees for artworks; an annual fall gala; and modest commission fees for sales of exhibited artworks.
